Do the testing listed before you go buy a new breaker.

With an AFCI you may have to wait a while for serenity.

The GFCIs are not nearly so much trouble and they probably do save some lives.

I switched the two wires I could disconnect to a different breaker and the new breaker tripped immediately. Seems bad...

Maybe not as bad as you think, it sounds like a short. If it's in an outlet, those are WAY cheaper than an AFCI breaker! Po)

Should I start disconnecting outlets and see what happens?

Two wires? Is this a squared d panel ? Anyway if there were two wires connected to the breaker terminal you need to connect them one at a time to the other breaker. Find out which one when connected causes the trip. Are you connecting to another afci breaker or a typical circuit breaker ?

Is there a way to test outlets to see if there is a short? I have an electrical tester. The wires to thE outlets go right into the back not the posts. I can't seem to easily disconnect them.
