afci breakers


im putting an addition on my house in new jersey are afci breakers required on the receptacles in the living room

How are we supposed to know? Contact your local permit department and ask them. Codes vary by county.

New Jersey is under NEC 2011 which would require AFCIs. Unless your local AHJ has made an exemption.

As has been stated, call your AHJ. In my town, AFCIs are required for "new" installs in existing structures. This meant that when I upgraded my service, everything was grandfathered in to non-AFCI. When I added a sub panel, it was "new" and needed AFCIs. (This was also a year ago, and the adopted codes may have shifted by a few years as well.)
