Just curious on what causes an AFCI breaker to trip?

AFCI breakers detect arc faults. They have circuitry in them that can distinguish between 'regular' arc faults (i.e. when you plug or unplug an appliance from an outlet, the little arc you sometime see) and 'irregular' arc faults, those that are caused from two conductors that are arcing. This could be due to broken insulation causing the conductors to contact each other, a loose receptacle conductor, etc.
