Adding 1000/2000 w 240v heater to 15 amp 240v circuit running 1/2 HP well pump
 
Hi new member here, hoping to gain some knowledge on trying to add an in wall heater to my bathroom.

First of all I am quite comfortable with doing most electrical jobs and have been doing so for quiet some time but mostly involving 120v circuits besides a couple 240v welders and compressors.

As I have said above I need to install a heater in my bathroom and was racking my brain on how to fish wires from upstairs to downstairs without creating too much work.

Anyways there is control box for a submersible pump in the entry way closet which backs on to the washroom. It runs off a 15 amp 230v circuit with 12 awg wire which means I could always put in a 20 amp breaker as well. The pump is 1/2 HP 230v with a 5 amp draw. I know the pump will pull a lot more amps at start up but how much more is the question and will adding a 2000w heater put too much draw on this circuit I know if i swap out the 15 amp for 20 amp I will gain almost 1200 w which will help but will it be enough to compensate for the start up draw.

I am not certain at all what kind of draw the pump will pull at start up maybe the 15 amp is sufficient? Any info would be much appreciated and if I have forgotten anything pls let me know.

You can NOT just swap the breaker unless you know that you have 20 amp wire there. It is most likely 15 amp wire.

It is a bad idea to mix the well pump and the heater. Just pull a new circuit to the heater.

Are you really 100% sure that the wire is 12 awg ?

Yes it's tek cable or tec, and it's exposed in the closet it is definitely 12 g. I will be putting it on its own circuit if I have to

Is there any way to calculate the draw both of these would have on this circuit with a 20 amp breaker?

The well pump draw will probably be between 20 and 30 amps on start up.

A 2000 watt heater will draw 8.7 amps at 230 volts.

2000 watts is over 6,800 BTUs. You really need that much heat in the bathroom.

Maybe not, but the heater was left by the previous owner and it is brand new. The heater says 1000/2000 w, I'm assuming 2 separate elements? My bathroom is about 10x12

If you think 2000 watts is too much to add to that circuit, then configure the heater for 1000 watt output. Should do the job.

A control box for a submersible pump is wired after the pressure switch so there is no constant power at the control box. It will only have power while the pump is running. Need another plan.

There is also a switch to power the pump right next to it, I think that has a constant, just assuming but have not checked yet

3400 is probably more then enough. How close does it stay to house temp without any heat now.

Might trip breaker when heat is on and pump tries to start.

It's normally around 17 DC, worst thing is I'm installing the heater for when we shower so pump will be cycling

Well pump is best on its own circuit.
