Ac 220

i'm having trouble with a window ac hook up. I have put in a double pole breaker with 12/2 wire. I ran the wire to the box and put in a 20amp 240v recepticale. The problem I'm haveing is the neg. How do you hook up the neg. The recepticale calls for 2 120 volt wires. where do you hook up the neg.

There isn't a neg. for 220 or 240 volts only two hots and an equipment ground. You connect the black and white of the 12/2 G to the breaker terminals and the bare ground to the terminal bar where the rest of your branch circuit grounds are connected. Color about an inch or so of the white wire at each termination with a black magic marker to identify it as being used as a hot wire. At the receptacle black and white to brass screws and the bare to the ground screw.

You might run the amps and voltage requirements on the nameplate by us just to be sure you have things correct.
