4-ways generally have a good snap sound to them.

Just use diagonal lugs, and don't try to use it as a 2-pole, and it will work.

how does a diagnal lug work?

To answer the questoin - YES they can be used as a single pole switch.

I hate to reply if you have to ask...but here goes......

It's the screws on opposite corners of the switch. One way it's on...the other it's off. Remember to turn off the power when mess'n with electricity...

A single pole switch is only 50 cents.....and it says on/off :jester:

But yeah, you can use them. You have a 50/50 chance of choosing the right two terminals and a 50/50 chance of installing it right side up.

Yes it will work fine. Connect one wire to a light colored screw and the other wire to a dark colored screw. Prior to installation you will need to use a multimeter to determine which combination of screws has the light turned on (close to zero ohms between the chosen screws) when the switch handle is up.
