30" whole house fan

I just replaced the motor in my whole house fan. The only one I could find is a three speed (replacing a two). The new motor is now running so slow that the slow speed will not open the louvers and the high speed is about what low was on my last motor. The rated RPM's are higher with the new one compared to the old one. This last motor lasted 20 years. What did I do wrong in hooking it up. The electric motor shop that sold me the motor said it would be faster than the old. HELP

Could the pully on the new motor be the wrong size?

is it going the correct direction?
is there a belt? if yes, is it tight enough?
is it the same voltage?
do you have the old & new motor nameplate data handy?
