Question

3 way wiring of lights

Guys, I'm sure this has been asked 100 times, but I'm investigating a home I just moved in to's wiring. I want to add a few more florescent lights to the garage. I thought it was going to be simple as there are only two incandescent and one switch (inside the kitchen door). However, after cutting in my hole and running most of the wire, I have found that it appears it was wired for a 3 way, but I don't know where the wires are going or how to tie in the new lights (not worrying about where the wires are going ). Neutrals ignored for now, here is what I have:

I would like to add two more lights, with a black and white wire each, but I'm not exactly sure where to tie them to, how many wires to run, or why these lights were connected this way?

Are you tying into the switch box or into the existing overhead light boxes?

I'm trying to tie in to light #2. They are in a line from the North wall (switch) to the south side of the garage ceiling (light 4). I'm in the process of hanging light #3. I'm dying here. I've done tons of research, but I can't find a similar setup.

Adding more lights by tieing into an existing light is simple. Connect to the two wires (W&B) going to the existing fixture. Don't care about any of the other wires in the box for this part.

If the existing switch only has B&W wire then it is not a three way. It appears they are using the cable red to switch the fixtures. Connect your new fixture to the white and red where the existing fixtures white and black are connected. The cable black is probably an unswitched power wire feed a receptacle or something.

That's what I was planning on, but in my image, all of the lights are attached to Red? I was going to push the white and the red lines to the next two lights, but wasn't sure. It seems like all the whites are connected and the blacks run somewhere else? Would I be correct in assuming that, because the whites are connected to the whites on the existing two lights and the reds to the blacks on the existing two, that i just piggyback on the red and white on the #2 light and carry forward to number three and four off of that? Thanks for the help!!! Trying not to get dead.

Welcome gtrob!

Back to the topic!

Yes, just attach the new wires from light 3 to the white and red wire of light 2. Ignore any other wires in the box.

3 way wiring can be confusing even after "understanding" it. Like the others have said you can just tie in the hot and neutral from the other lights and you will be good to go.
