3 way switch randomly does not work

hey all,

I have a 3 way switch circuit to the hallways. There are two 3 way switchs controlling the hallway lights. Recently, it started being intermittent. The switches are practically new. I replaced the old ones several months ago.

So you turned the breaker off, pulled off the cover, checked your connections, and it still does this?

Wire ends held on or held in using screws make much more reliable connections than wires just pushed into the backs of switches, receptacles, etc. and seem to stick in place.

**********

Although we cannot rule out a wire breaking unseen inside the black or white covering, if that were the cause then it requires a lot of busywork testing to find.

Step 2 consists of turning off the power, unhooking at least one end of the suspected wire from the switch or light or receptacle, clipping one lead of a meter set to continuity/ohms testing to that end, and clipping the other lead to the other end, using a long length of wire stretched across the floor in between if needed.

(Step 1 consists of finding the other end of the wire you are about to test.)

The above is not that complicated, but is arduous enough to make you want to check for other reasons firs.

Don't over look the possibility that one of the new switches might be junk---It happens.

Is this a case where if one switch is in a certain position the other does not work? If so you have mis-wired a switch.

when i initially replaced, it was working fine from both switches.

it start intermittently working several days ago and stopped working alltogether. but only if i have it set to a specific configuration...:

A:
first switch can switch fine when second switch is turned off (down). second switch will sometimes turn on but immediately off when switched up.

Maybe a loose connection. I'll have to verify.

Sounds like a loose connection, probably in the second switch. If you are using the push in connection move the wires to the screw terminals.
