3-way illuminated switch help
1 Attachment(s)
Having trouble with an illuminated switch. Main(1) switch(not illuminated) with HOT turns on and off the lights, but other switch(2) does not illuminate when 1 is off, or turn lights on. If switch 1 is on, switch 2 will turn off lights and illuminate, and turn lights on. Checked connections and voltages many times, all are correct. Any help please? Drew a quick diagram of the wiring. Black dots are the common (hot).

The black wires in the drawing needs to be connected to the COMMON terminal on the switch. The position varies by manufacturer so you need to verify this. The common screw is normally black coloured or marked on the switch as COMMON.
|
Switch 1 might be defective.
Regarding the cable going between the switches ... Does the red wire to ground show 120 volts with switch 1 in one position and the white wire to ground show 120 volts with switch 1 in the other position? Do these measurements at both switches. |
Your symptoms describe incorrect wiring at the switches. If switch 1 has to be in a certain position before switch 2 will work, it's a wiring issue, usually at the switch(es). Your diagram is correct about the way it should be wired, at least to get the 3-way working.

Fixed
Thanks for the help, looks like the one marked common on switch 1 was not the common. Switched the common and a traveler and everything started working perfect.
