3 way dimmer ?

Hey All,

I just tried installing a 3 way dimmer switch in my basement. After installing, I noticed that the dimmer (transformer) was hot to the touch. The directions said that the unit may feel warm to the touch under normal conditions, but this felt hot. The unit is rated at 600W max. How do I determine what the wattage is going to the dimmer? Would too much wattage make the unit hot?

Thanks for any help you guys can give!

Simply count up the wattage of the lamps the dimmer controls.
Anywhere close to the dimmer's max will make it "very warm" to hot. At or very near the limit will make it hot.
If you can't hold you finger on it it is TOO hot. In this case I'd step up to a 1000 watt unit.
