3 prong outlet to 2 wire system??

Our house was built in 1949 and only has 2 wire throughout the house. I see the PO has 3 prong outlets in a few and the are not grounded. There is no way to ground those because the box is simply nailed to the studs. Is this compliant? Any issues with doing this (safety etc)?

Receptacles in homes wired without grounding can have receptacles replaced with GFCI receptacles.
Its not necessary to replace all the recpts. as any outlets that are wired 'down stream' from GFCI recpts. are protected also.

However, those receptacles still aren't "grounded." Yes, it's a hell of a lot safer with the GFCI, but don't expect an equipment ground to work. Ideally the ungrounded 3-prong receptacles should be marked as ungrounded.
