3 prong cord hook up

I am installing a new dishwasher and I have to hook up a 3 prong electrical cord. I bought a kit and the middle wire is clearly labeled "grounding wire". I need to hook up the 2 remaining wires to the dishwashers black and white wires. My question is does it matter which of the 2 remaining wires on the cord I attach to black or white? Neither is labeled black or white, positive or negative.

yes, it matters. connect black to black and white to white.

Ok...thats the problem..the only wire on the cord that is color coded is the green wire..the other 2 do not have colored interior coverings that I can see..they came pre stripped..the outer covering of the cord is standard gray with no pos or neg markings....

wait, I think I found it...on the front of the plug itself there is a "w" next to one of the prongs..I'm assuming this is white..thanks!!!

It does not matter.

Look for a ridge on one side of the cord. This will be the white wire.

Ok..didn't see any white or black..I'm assuming, hopefully, that the "w" next to one of the prongs stands for white..there is a "g" next to the top prong for "ground" I'm assuming again..

Yup..the ridge is on the same side as the "w" prong..thanks so much!! My wife would have been pissed if I blew up her new dishwasher - I would then replace that one by manually doing dishes!!

It does matter. The black wire goes to the smaller of the two prongs. It's the left prong when looking at the plug. It might not be smaller on a three prong plug.

Point the plug at the receptacle (outlet), that is, away from you, and with the ground pin at the bottom. The "white" or neutral prong is to the left.
