?!?!?!??? What is it you have today? Dryer, Oven, Other?

220V vs 240V isn't the difference. You either have 120V or 240V circuits in residential. They are either phase to neutral (120V) or phase to phase (240V, no neutral).

How many amp branch circuit is required for the compressor (@ 240V)?

Check the wiring going to that receptacle. Twelve gauge supports at most 20 amps, ten gauge supports at most 30 amps, eight gauge supports at most 40 amps.

Provided you stay within the wire amperage limits, you can swap out the receptacle for one that matches the plug for the compressor which in turn should match the ampere requirement of the compressor. (Receptacles have ampere ratings also) Change the breaker pair unit in the panel to match.

What do you have right now for a receptacle and what do you need to match the compressor?

Call your electric company and tell them in your best Captain Kirk voice, that you need more power. Then post back and tell us their reply.

Maybe something bad, maybe something good. I guess we'll never know, 'cause you're going to guard it. You won't touch it, will you?
