200 amp panel question

I currently have a 100amp service to my house. There is a 100 amp main breaker outside right under the meter. Then it feeds into the house to the basement to a 100amp load center. I am currently out of space in the load center and it is old and rough looking. I would like to upgrade to 200 amp service at some point in the future. My question is could I have a new 200 amp service panel put in the basement to give me more space and leave the 100amp main breaker outside? And then at a later date have the service upgraded to 200amp and at that time the outside breaker upgraded along with the wire feeding the breaker panel if it needs to be upgrade. This would also give me an inside main shut off instead of having to go outside to shut off power to all breakers. Just was wondering if installing the 200 amp panel after the 100 amp main breaker outside would cause problems.

Thanks for the help

200 amp panel question

You can do that without a problem yes. Your house would still be protected by the 100 amp main breaker outside regardless what you have inside. But why not just get a larger 100 amp service?

200 amp panel question

I want to upgrade to 200 amp service here someday so I was thinking it would be a waste to buy a new 100 amp panel now and then turn around and have to buy a 200 amp panel when I upgrade later.
