200 amp breaker in a 100 amp service panel?

I have a 200 amp service with a 200 amp breaker at my meter. I have a 100 amp service panel in the house. Can I "upgrade" my 100 amp service panel by replacing the 100 amp breaker with a 200 amp breaker or should I replace the 100a panel with a 200a one?

Ultimately, I want to run power to the garage from the 100 amp panel.

tx,
Cal

If the panel is not rated for 200 amps then yeah you'd have to replace it. You are lucky though if the rest of the service is 200, as this job should be easier and the outside cut off switch helps.

200 amp breaker in a 100 amp service panel?

Very unlikely that a 100a panel is rated to carry 200a
So Yes you would have to replace it
And its usually more costs effective to buy a whole panel VS just the main breaker
Save the 100a for a sub

200 amp breaker in a 100 amp service panel?

you need to check the wire size that feeds the panel. Since you have a 100 amp breaker there, the wire feeding that panel may only be rated for that 100 amp breaker and not the 200 amp breaker at the meter. If so, the breaker at the meter simply functions only as a disconnect and not an actual overcurrent protective device (OCPD) aka; breaker.

200 amp breaker in a 100 amp service panel?

There are few cases I have see some peoples installed 200 amp load centre but used 100 amp breaker due the meter and riser is still on 100 amp size and down the road they will change to 200 amp service.

This part I useally don't do that very often normally just go with full 200 amp service and be done with it otherwise you will have to rip few items out to get the proper 200 amp sized conductors in there.

Merci.

200 amp breaker in a 100 amp service panel?

Is the garage a detached building? If it is, you could possibly take a second 100 amp service off the meter and feed the garage.
Are you sure that the "breaker" at the meter is really a breaker and not a disconnect switch? My meter has a 225 switch that looks like a breaker but the panel is labeled that it is a switch and the utility company specifically told me it was a switch and not a breaker.
