2 wire switch connected to 3 wire outlet

This may have been answered before, but I cannot seem to find it. I have home built in the late sixties, and while I've been able to figure out pretty much everything else, this perplexes me. I am trying to install a ceiling light where there was none before. There is an existing wall switch with standard 12/2(white and black) wire that runs to an outlet with 12/3 wire (white, black, red). This outlet, in turn, is run to the other two outlets in the room, all with the same configuration. However, the switch only runs the first outlet. I'd like to remove the switch so that the outlet is always hot, but jump off of the circuit to install the light. Any suggestions?

Firs you will have to describe to us all the wires and connections in the box with the switch controlled outlet. A picture is best.

A so describe the wires and connections in the box with the switch.

The switch controlled outlet has the two white (neutral) wires running in and out the top and bottom of the left side (if you are facing it). The right side has a red wire out the top and a black wire out the bottom, both hot (120V). I've run a multimeter on the entire line of outlets, all of which are on the same breaker. Each outlet looks the same except the last one in series, which only has one neutral (white) wire. The white wires all read no voltage (or next to none, the multimeter always picks up something). At the switch, when tested individually, both the black and white wires read 120V. (Update, I have to get to the store in the AM, I think the switch is bad now because the outlets work all the time, regardless of on or off.)

Which box does the power feed from the panel come into?
