Hello all. My sister just got a house last week. There is a ceiling fan in the living room that is controlled by two single pole switches on the wall by the door. They say on and off. Both switches power the light and the fan. They are in a triple gang switch box with one being for the porch light and the other two both powering the ceiling fan. I was wondering if at one point, one switch powered the light and the other one powered the fan. That means there would have been 14 or 12/3 and someone took the old fan down and tied the black and red wires to the blue and black wires on the new fan so that either switch powers both. Does this sound like what would cause this

You are probably correct.

I had a situation like yours, except it was wired correctly at the fan: black to black and red to blue. I figured it was something in the fan at that point, so I just left it alone.

You may be right, though.

I got around to pulling the fan down and that was exactly the problem. I put the fan on the black wire and the light on the red wire. Now I have a switch for the light and one for the fan

Glad it was an easy fix.
