Is this a 120V setup?

2 wires coming in with a ground wire (metal braided wire). Is this a 120 setup?

Here is the picture of the wires coming from the pole.

240V.

Each insulated wire is 120 to ground....240 between them.

The bare wire is the grounded conductor (neutral).

What size is your main panel box?

twilightcall 01-06-2008 06:05 AM

It is a breaker box. How can I tell the size of the box? Will it say on it? Thanks.

Andy in ATL 01-06-2008 06:28 AM

Look at your main breaker. Why are you asking this?

Speedy Petey 01-06-2008 07:03 AM

That is an absolutely standard 120/240v service drop.

I'll also ask, what is the actual question?

twilightcall 01-06-2008 07:55 AM

I just wanted to make sure it was 120/240V service. Here is a pic of it connecting to the house.

Wow. That looks kind of nasty.
I assume the meter is inside the house? POCOs don't like that at all any more.

Andy in ATL 01-06-2008 08:59 AM

Looking at the framing I don't think it was built in '04. How old is the house?

jwhite 01-06-2008 09:07 AM

what is the extra tap off of the wires (before they go into the wall)

If the meter and main disconnect are at the house then this tap is probably illegal.

Stubbie 01-06-2008 10:19 AM

Yes I would also like to know the meter location. As jwhite said someone has installed split bolt taps on both service drop hots and messenger (neutral). If that is legal I would be very surprised. Could explain exactly where those taps go to and what they land on?

Also the drop looks rather new was this recently done?

Whoever did the drip loop was drunk.

twilightcall 01-06-2008 10:58 AM

What is a drip loop? The house was built in 45. I didn't make that connection. It was already on the house. The house was vacant for over 10 years.
The meter isn't in the house. It is outside the house under the carport.

So why would they have connected those wires to the incoming wires. They don't go to anything. The taps are connected to some kind of triangle. It is about 1 inch high and wide. The tap wires don't go into the house. Like I said I don't know the history. This is a property we are purchasing.

What is POCO?
