Zoning a house

what is the best way to zone a house? I want to have the basement as one zone, the 1st floor as another, I'd like to have the 2nd floor as another but not sure where you'd but the thermostat at? the 2nd floor ha a large open below area in it for the foyer.. there is a hallway up there or should it go in a room or where would you put it? I'd love to have this three zoned because its always +8 degrees hotter up there during a heat call it seems like by my quick temp checks and -10 deg in the basement (conditioned spaces)

If the bedroom has a return in it. You can put it in the bedroom.

But, your hallway will still be warmer during the day if the bedroom door s are closed because of the heated air rising from the lower level.

Often. You can get away with the stat in the hallway. if you have the first floor going into set back at night time.
