When the contactor snaps engaged the fan and compressor should come on. If the fan runs when you help it....sounds like the capacitor is bad.
You should hear the compressor hum slightly for about 1.5 to 2 seconds then kick out on overload since it is trying to start but can't if the capacitor is bad.

They both use capacitors but it may be a dual capacitor that does both fan and comp.
This is very common.
It will be silver metal and about 2 inches diameter and about 4-6 inches tall. If it is a dual run cap, it will have three terminals on the top marked Herm, C, and Fan.

Get the rating off of it and get a new one. I just replaced a 45uf(MFD) / 5uf 370v one last night.

They are less tha 30 bucks.

You could also have two separate caps....they will be 2 terminal ones. You could also have a black plastic start one for the comp.
Let me know what you find in there.

Is one brand capacitor better than another?
