We had the above unit installed last spring in our 30 yr old two story home in Central PA. I was told to expect a 30% decrease in my electric bills in the winter since the old system was electric ceiling cable type heat. My bills have actually been higher this year than last by at least 10%. Admittedly it is somewhat colder, but along with the Heat Pump/AC we installed Pella windows and a Pella sliding glass door. All of our windows have been replaced over the last 3 yrs. I have installed a new storm door on the front door. I am using on average 500 KW hours more each month than last year. It went from around 3400 to 3900 KWH over a 30 day monthly billing period. I have had the Heating guy out here twice and they insist eveyrthing is working normally. They are a well respected local contractor who have been operating here for 30 yrs or so and were recommended by my general contractor when we had the work done.

Also, the compressor makes a lot of noise when turning on, like a vibration type noise.

Am I experiencing normal heat pump operation or has this unit had issues? I am very disappointed with the heat. It was fine during the A/C season.

It is just my wife and myself, nothing else has changed and we have the thermostats set at 68! Most of the time we are cold.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Who quoted you the 30%? A Salesperson? They usually know very little mechanically and like to quote figures to make a sale. I would nicely get another York tech to check the unit if you are uncomfortable with the installer and NOT jump to conclusions/point fingers at anyone. It is impossible to compare 2 winters exactly. Perhaps the 2nd tech if he is experienced may find a problem the 1st one may be unfamiliar with.

Could be over charged.
Also, could be that it was not set up properly.
Along with, you may have undersized duct work.

That model is a good performing model.

What is the model number of the indoor unit.
What thermostat did they use.
Are they locking out the strip heaters when they aren't needed.
Do you set your temp back during the day and or night( DON'T DO THAT). It will cost more to heat.

Do you know what R value your duct is.

Not sure what R value the ducts are. They are round about 10" insulated diameter. I will have to go up in the attic and see if I can tell.

We don't set the thermostats back at all, constant 68, 24 hr/day

They used two Honeywell VisionPro TH8000s. There is a Honewell control panel in the attic with 3 red lights on when the heating strips are activated and then there are green lights for the two supply systems.

Thanks for your inputs. I really was expecting to save on heating bills, maybe not 30% but at least 10-15%. Oh well. Not the case so far that's for sure.

I have seen compressors have problems if.. Your old system was a R 22 system & the old line set was used & not flushed and a R410 system was installed. I have seen dealers that had a so called good reputation do this. The oil from R22 & R410 a will not mix & can cause compressor failure

What brand and model number zoning panel.

Over charged heat pump will use more electric.

Kenmac, There was no old system, this is a new install so the oil and R type is not in question.

How often are the lights on showing heat strips are on... Did they install under size heat strips.. Example... did they install 5 KW when they should have installed 10 KW, Etc

Thats the HP and air handler numbers.
But what brand and model number is the Zone panel.
The panel the thermostats are wired to.

It's a Honeywell HZ432 TrueZONE.

Since the zone panel is in the attic above the second floor, I need a ladder to see it. There are red and green lights however I have not checked on a regular basis due to having to drag a ladder upstairs.

Thats a very good zone panel.

I would guess, that your contractor probably doesn't have it set up quite right.

And its bringing in the aux heat, before it needs to.
