Wood Stove Question

I am putting a wood stove in my garage, going through a exterior wall. I have a section of double wall pipe, do I need to also use a thimble? thanks

Hi econdave

Any time you take a wood or pellet/corn stove flue through a wood framed wall, its a good idea to us a thimble. The other thing to remeber is you cannot use type B double wall, it has to be the stainless type UT all fuel pipe. Hope this helps

Good luck

I have stainless metal fab double wall pipe, the problem I have is that the O.D. is 8 1/2 inch, I cant find a thimble to fit. Do I really need the thimble? if so what can I do? thanks

Hi econdave

Have you tried the supplier where you got the pipe for the thimble? As far as needing the thimble, my personal opinion is yes. But in actuality you could sleeve the wall with a piece of 10" single wall. This would give you ample air gap around the flue pipe. But as you will notice on the thimble is that it has holes in one side of it. This is to keep from overheating the wall cavity and causing spontanious combustion inside the wall, that would mean for a bad Christmas. The other thing I always reccomend for anyone burning wood, check with your insurance company. If you are not insured for wood burning they can and generaly will deny any claim for damage caused by burning wood. Hope this helps, let me know if I can help further

Good luck

Rusty thanks for the info. Not sure I understand fully. The double wall looks like a muffler that the 6 inch pipe connects to at both ends. Is this not enough to insulate the interior of the wall? I cant find the company or supplier that makes the double wall pipe I have, it is called meta fab. Does these pipes not come in common size, 8inch, 6 inch etc? All the places I call say they have 4 inch thimble, 6 inch etc.

Hi econdave

I took the liberty of easing your search. I did not delve too deaply into their website, but if you go into it and do not find what you are looking for there is a phone # also. Here is the website, http://www.ventingpipe.com/category....ce=msnmetalfab. all you have to do is click on this link and follow it to where you are going.

Good luck
Rusty
