wood stove - chimney liner?
I have a dedicated chimney for a wood burning fireplace, but I really wanted to run a single-wall liner, to protect the older chimney and all.
I've seen the black-pipe 25gauge stuff at retail stores for pretty cheap, then I've had people tell me you have to run stainless at a cost of like $600 for the kit. The way I look at it, you could just use the darn chimney as is, so wouldn't any heavier steel pipe be better than nothing? OR am I just being crazy and should just pipe it right into the chimney??? What has everyone else done in this situation? Last edited by johnnyboy; 11-06-2007 at 05:16 PM. |

I dont think its allowed to run the black steel pipe where its concealed as in a chimney as it may rust.
If it does rust and the top of the chimney has a fitting for the black pipe to come out, you'll have a void inside the chimney between the outside of the black pipe and the brick which would allow smoke and carbon monoxide to come back into your house. You can make a fitting to pipe the stove into the chimey and use as is but it will be a lot harder to clean. |

Also, if your chimney is unlined (just brick and mortar, with no tile) it is not safe to use it with a woodstove. You need either a stainless or tile liner. And yes, they're expensive!
