wood/electric furnace controls

I want to know how an L4064R 1027 alternate furnace interlock limit control works. Does the wood furnace need to be on to bring the plenum heat to 140F to get it to close the normally open contacts?

The low voltage wiring is a mess. I want to rewire the control circuit. I am concerned that I may cause a short circuit on the low voltage wiring if I make a wrong conection. Can anyone out there give me some tips on how to test the aux limit control?
