wiring a line voltage programmable thermostat

I just bought a Lux ELV4 to replace a manual honeywell T451A thermostat. The wiring instructions are not so clear and am a little confused about how to wire it. the stat is a 4 pole (2 lines & 2 loads). I only need 1 pole so will cap off the unused wires. The box has a white wire and a black wire running into it. I know usually its black to black & white to white but the stat has black & red. can i connect the line of the stat to the black and the load to the white? is this the right way to do it? if not, how should it be done? Thanks!
