yes they require a transformer.

your red wires are your end switch, they go to T , T on your circulator relay.(wire your zone valve end switches together then run your red wires to T, T.) Your yellow wires go to your zone valve t-stats and transformer. one yellow wire goes to common of the transformer, the other yellow wire goes to W on your zone valves thermostat and then you will run a wire from R on your thermostat to R of the transformer. since you are wiring up two zone valves, the wires coming out of R on your thermostats will be wired together and then wire nutted to the wire comming out of R on your transformer. your yellow wires coming out of your zone valves will be wired together and then wire nutted to the wire coming out of C(common) of your transformer. hope this makes sense to you.
