Will not cool to set temp

I have a Carrier Heat Pump that is roughly 25 years old. Last year we had the air handler motor replaced and everything completely serviced. We were informed last year that our "Stat" was not sending the correct temp back to the unit. Given that it was an older mercury stat we went ahead and replaced it.

Now this year we are unable to get desired temp indoors. When the stat is set to 70-72 the coolest we can expect the house to get is 76-78 depending on the time of day.

I understand that the unit is old and will eventually need to be replaced. Just hoping the prolong the life of the unit.

Any idea's as to why we can't get to set temp would be appreciated. Also and replacement brands that are recommended would be a great help as well.

Thanks
Dave

A couple of questions. What is the delta T ? Is the house well insulated ?

Could be low on freon and lots of compressors that age have worn valves and have lost pumping capacity. Not worth spending a lot of $$ on IMO.

Delta T is the temperature difference between the cold register/vent air and the room temperature. Your delta T needs to be at least 15 degree . Another word, your cold vent air has to be at least 15 degree cooler than your room temp at that time.
