Will this burn up a blower motor?

What will happen if I energize two terminals on a 3 speed motor at the same time. For instance putting 120VAC to the low speed (red) and the high speed (black) at the same time.

Will this damage the motor or just kick it into one of those speeds?

I'm trying to add a custom mod to my furnace to control the fan speed and can't seem to find any internal diagrams on how a 3 speed motors works.

Thanks.

Only one speed can be energized at a time. If more than one is energized, the motor will 'fight itself' because it's trying to go at two different speeds.

Micro is right. as the motor operate the unused motor tap have a measurable back EMF that is just looking for a place to go. Two diff speeds hooked together give it that pathe and will cook the windings.

If you look at the motor there is a diagram on there that tell you what each wire is for. You might have to pull the motor out to see that diagram.

~grumble~ how many times you pull a motor and the diagram is so singed you can't read it?

Well I am an optimist. I like to think they are as nice a clean as when I put them in.

Black=High
Blue=Med High
Yellow=Med Low
Red=Low
White=Common

And, yes. 2 windings energized at the same time, lets the magic smoke out.
