Why does my air handler have an electric heater

I bought the house abuot 6 months ago. MY AC and heat are seperate system. The heat is baseboard radiators. While up in the attic, looking for a possible leak, I noticed the air handler has a 240V switch and it says electric heater on it. It's a GE, model number BGWE948BC1000. I can't find this model number online (looks old). The home inspection didn't mention anything about an electric heater and I'm trying to find out what it is. Currently the switch is in the off position. Any information would be appreciated.

May or may not have a heat kit in your air handler. Might just have been that companies standard label they put on. Your air handler is required to have a means of electrical disconnect.

It may have a heater that was installed when electric was cheaper then oil.
You could have a heat pump.

You won't find it listed on the internet. Since GE was bought out by Trane around 27 years ago.

The switch is "off" and nobody has touched it. The AC worked in the summer, so I don't think this is just an electrical disconnect for the unit. Is there a easy way to find out if there is a heat pump.... or just turn in on and see what happens?
Thanks

You could use an ohmmeter to confirm that the input is not open or shorted. You'll be reading only the first heat strip because of the sequencer relays.

E.g., 5 kw of elec. heat @ 240v should read [240^2]/5,000 = ~12 ohms.
