Why does hitting compressor with hammer work?

I know some compressors hang-up at beginning of season, but wondering why exactly? Saw a posting that said it was compressor rings hanging against piston wall...? Lack of lubrication?

Some just told me his compressor, after running it recently during our hot weather, was working fine, but then stopped. Condenser fan was still running. Hitting it with hammer started it immediately.

What hangs 'em up at beginning of season and what hangs 'em up during the season?

Thx much for any help.

Thx for your reply wheels~, but I'm afraid I can't answer that - dunno. All the instances I've heard about involve older compressors I believe (R-22) if that helps any.

Does it have a Bendix spring?

I'm reminded of my '68 Cougar.
I used to keep a 32oz hammer under the front seat.

Noper, no Bendix spring Tarheel~ , but I was just googling for PSC Motors and I believe (at this point - not finished yet however), that they do operate with slip-ring brushes, (Wheelsup's question) in which case I could understand how there could be a hang-up with that, and how a hammer could help.

Centrifugal start switch can hang up and not close.

The run windings are not direction specific, so without the start winding being in the circuit, the run windings can't more the rotor.

Any spot on the compressor better than others to hit with the hammer? I've seen different recommendations in online postings - different site.

Anywhere you can get your hammer/mallet through. I prefer on the top.

That's how I had to start my 1993 GMC. Bang on the fuel tank with a hammer.

It's called 'Motivation 101'.

You try to get work out something....you smack it....it certainly worked for me every time my dad smacked me.
