Why did my Hunter Thermostat blow up? ....twice

We came in the house the other day and smelled an odd burnt smell...burt wires, computer board etc. Turns out it was my hunter auto II temp heat pump thermostat. Therefore neither the compressor nor the blower was responding. So I 'brilliantly' decided to take the exact unit from upstairs (exact same wiring)...they have both been working fine since 2002...wired it correctly and tightly. Turned the fuses back on. Everything was okay and then as soon as i switched it to A/C...it blew up again. .....thoughts?

m ay be in the circuit board, or the coil of the outdoor contactor, or in the wires themselves.

Generally, if you have a multimeter, and know how to use it, you can find a short.
