whirring noise return duct

I have Trane air handler Model # 4tee3f40b1000aa that makes a high pitch whirring noise and is most noticeable at the 80% speed. When the Dealer came out he said the whirring noise is beacause the return duct is not supplying enough air. What would you recommend to solve this problem?

if the return was too small .. he should have increased the size or added return when he installed the furnace..Is the filter clean ?? Remove your filter & see if it makes the noise

When you remove the filter or take off the air return grille the whirring noise stops.

How do I make that happen? Can I just change to a grille that allows more air to the return duct?

add a return or enlarge the 1 you have... Again , If the installer told you it was too small.. Why didn't he enlarge it or add to it when he installed the unit ?

The installer did not tell me the air return was too small. I called and complained about the whirring noise and they sent out a technician who said the air return duct was not getting enough air. The technican recommend adding a larger grille. I am waiting for installers manger to give me a call about solution to the problem. Thanks for the information.

Hi. I had the dealer out and he cut out a whole in the box the air handler is mounted on and then put a grill there. They described this as adding a return. Was this a reasonable solution?

Did the hole rid the whirring noise? What size hole was made? This does not sound like a proper fix to the noise. Just my 2 worth.

Where is the air handler located? Is it in a conditioned area?

The hole is about 6x14 and did get rid of the whirring noise. The air handler is in a closet off the hallway.

Is the system a heat pump? Is the new return for just the closet area? How big is the closet? And does it have a louvered door to allow air in from outside the closet area?

I am a homeowner who has worried a lot about having enough return. While your new return is not elegant, I think it may be OK. Returns are a lot less rocket science than other parts of HVAC.
