When to purge air from hot water system

Hi;
I have a hot water heating system, and for some reason, I have always purged the air when the system is running and warm. Is this the correct time to purge, or should I do it when the system is not running and cold?

Thanks.
I Googled yesterday and found an article stating that the radiators should be warm, but that the pump should be off. I never had a problem with purging while the pump was running.

I eventually purged all of the air from the system. Two of the radiators which are the furthest from the furnace took some time, and as you said, the system needed to get hot.

Thanks

Purging air from hot water heating system

How do you purge air from hot water heating system?
There are no vents on the 2nd floor base board radiators. Should I install vents? What type? Where?

Thanks
