Is it cold somewhere and I just don't know about it?

whats with all the heat questions?

I've got another month before I'm happy turning the heat on.... but I had to set my automatic thermostat back to 60 degrees so the heat won't kick on overnight (was set at 65). We haven't had indoor temps less than 67 yet. Nights have been in the high 40s.

Today it was warmer outside than inside so doors and windows open! YAY.

Been freezing north of the 49th for a while now at night, depending on how far you go. Some of the highest seasonal temp swings on the planet around here. Highs of around 100 F in the summer with 95% humidity to lows of close to -40F in the winter.

Got to 45* here last night in Boston... our second floor bedroom was 59* when I woke up this morning, very chilly when you're exiting from being under 2 blankets.

The variation is just a part of Mother Nature.

We are familiar with it living in the "Theater of Seasons".

We had 90F and two days later that a hard frost that wiped out most of the tomatoes an peppers amd no real cold predicted for a week or two and have not switched on thee furnace - Windows open at night for good sleeping with the elecetric blanket on 3 or 4. Might turn on the heat in a week or two, but it is already inspected and ready to go complete with a new filter.

By January 1, we will be water skiing on the Mississippi River or doing Polar Bear swims at the local lakes. The sissies will be ice fishing 100-300 miles north in heated shacks with furnaces, satellite TV, refrigerators and freezers. You can't change the weather, but can enjoy it and challenge it.

They do not swim in the ice. They cut trenches and areas in the ice, remove it and then charge money (goes to a charity) to just jump in an swim (towels included). Also they might drill holes in the ice for the hardy ice-fishermen to compete in a fishing contest.

It is all in fun and living with nature. We are lucky since we have dry snow and rather predictable weather (not always good, but far better than predicting rain probability).

Never hurts to start cleaning and tweaking in heating systems before it gets cold because it happens so fast. Oil tank full,(cheaper now) new nozzles, new oil filter, new air filter, combustion analyzer checks, air out of systems, water fills working properly, thermostat raised to check operation.
Won't be long now.

Yep. This'll be our first full winter in this house. Last house was a rental with a horribly designed forced air system. This house has a 14 yr old Weil McLain boiler that ran without a hitch from last January on, so that should be good.

It's a NG unit, so not much to do on the fuel side, but vacuumed it out, new batteries in the thermostat, set up all my presets, made sure my radiators didn't have any air in them, small stuff that makes me feel better I guess. Fired it up and ran it up to temp, checked pressure and temp, oiled the circulator pump motor, should be good to go!

Better safe than sorry...rather not find the issues when it drops below 0f. Which could be next week around here ;-)

I just called my oil company for the annual service--they gently reminded me that Jul thru Sep is the proper time to call to schedule service for this time of year. I was fortunate and got an appt a few weeks out, but it's a day time one, so I'll have to miss work.

Make sure you shovel out and/or inspect your chimney and your damper as well.

If you don't have a CO detector in the basement and just outside (or inside) each bedroom area, now is as good a time as any to get some (or put new batteries in the ones you have)
