What Size are Return Ducts Usually

Hi

We don't have any return Ducts in this house,we have the Grills to think we do

What size do they Usually use and do they still use the Square Ducts like they used to.

I'm re-doing the bathroom and on the other side of the wall is the Grill,Before I close the wall up on the bathroom side I want to have a Return Duct run.

I'm not sure if a Bathroom usually has a Return Duct,if so then I will need two running into one line.

Thanks

Seems pretty odd. Where does your furnace get its return air then?

Returns are sized by calculations just like supply ducts are. You cannot guess at it and do yourself or your system any good at all.

we are coming up to 20 years now(10 years I've lived here) and I think from Day one they never put them in.

hell the bathroom wall, looks like its insulated as it has a vapor barrier.I remove all the drywall and the idiots just ran the barrier on the 2x4's and close up the wall.

If you go to every room in the house were they have a grill its empty just a big cavity.

So I'm not shocked anymore to what I find

How much does it cost usually to run one return duct so I can get the drywall guys in to mud and tape.

I need the whole house do but need that bathroom wall done

So you have grills on your walls, right? That's normal...They're never ducted in residential construction. The stud cavities and floor joist cavities are used to convey return air from the main return trunk up into the various rooms of the house. There's no need or reason to install ducts in the stud or joist spaces.

Where you put your furnace filter in your basement (or wherever your furnace is) there should be a large duct going into the bottom of the furnace. That's the return air boot that connects to the return air trunk.
If you don't have that I'd like to see a picture of what you're talking about.

As for discussion of costs for someone to put in ductwork, we don't permit that here since we're a DIY site.

Its common to have wall cavities as a return chase.

It is not the best thing, but it is common.

You can run a duct if you want. You may however. Be better off expense wise. If you simply seal the chase from pulling in unconditioned air. By putting in a block slightly above the grille height(guessing your duct system is in the basement). And caulking the joint where the 2X4s and drywall meet.

If you decide to install duct(wall stack). It can be very diffilcult now, since your ducts in the basement can be in the way at some areas.

As to what size to use. Depends on the room its self. Won't hurt to use 3 x 12 or 14. Even if the room only needed 3 x 10.

Be carefull though. Returns ducted through wall cavities. Generally need a greater number of returns. Since the duct can sometimes be more restrictive then just the open cavity was.

Returns are not allowed in bathrooms, or within 10' of a bathroom(many are though), or within 10' of a kitchen exhaust hood.

Possible. that he is laughing at the ironics. Another site he belongs to. That is not DIY, doesn't allow pricing discussion either. But for different reason.

I could not find any thing about price discussion in registration agreement rules.

What am I missing?

Since this is DIY pricing should not be an issue if somebody in a poster's area could give him a ball park.

Did you maybe add some new rules I don't know about?
