What Size A/C???

I have a levitt cape about 600 sq feet to cool but in the cooling area is a kitchen and boiler in the wall. My house gets a lot of sun. In the daytime. I had a 12,000 btu last year and it did nothing. Any idea what size would be ideal, I've heard too much is not good?

Can you do something to reduce the solar gain? Plant a tree or get some shading screens or an awning?

I would look into a ductless minisplit or something. You don't have ductwork so a heat pump or ac isn't going to do any good. Portable ac's aren't all that good imo

What is the reason that a larger a/c wouldn't do

I suppose it could but a bigger one will probably need a duct system. Bigger than 12k is 1.5 ton territory. You don't have ductwork right?

Why not look into a 16-20k ductless split? If you had ductwork, if say look into a 1.5 ton heat pump or ac.

I would also consider some energy improvements first if possible.

An 18,000, or larger window unit could be used.

Too large of an A/C will run in short bursts, and fail to remove humidity. But if there's a large heat load, then a large A/C will run for a long time so it will remove humidity, no problem.

I wouldn't hesitate to put in a 18,000BTU window unit if the 12,000 didn't have the muscle to do the job. But, be aware that you may need a 240V outlet to plug it in to!

As much as I avoid them an extended warranty may be a good idea with these units as they are all made in China and put it this way the quality is "not overbuilt" in them. They are made to throw away. Try not to run it when there is lightning either or a power surge could damage it.

Thanks for the heads up. My wife and I were originally going to do the split duct but that's way out of our price range. So I'm going to have to go with an a/c unit.
