What to seal ducts with in unconditioned space - foil tape? mastic?

If you have ducts running through your basement or attic what do you think is better at sealing them? Is one easier or more effective than the other? Mastic would just be painted on the duct seams with a brush correct?

Mastic brush applied, or mastic tape.

Now what do you think would be advisable?
No really...which do you think would be the answer?

1. Foil tape? (made for just this purpose and not effected by heat)
2. Paint on mastic? (made for what application)

If you were to name some products this would go a lot better for you.

Not all UL181 foil tape is actually good for sealing.
