What is the name for...

I am looking to find the sticky, gummy, thick, black "tape" that is typically used to seal the small openings around the lineset penetrations through the plenum to the coil and is also used as a wrappable insulation for linesets. It is difficult to find if you do not know the name. Is there a trade name for this? Anyone?

If you are looking to seal plenum holes my preferences are:

#1 silver foil duct tape

#2 silicone

#3 mastic or red durodyne duct sealer available for Pros

We also have access to black Virginia foam insulation tape which is what I use to patch small holes in AC insulation and wrap around TX valve bodies so they don't sweat and drip all over the furnace. Available only from refrigeration wholesalers. Try Acklands or Graingers, they may sell it to DIYers.

Thumb Gum...it's gray, not black, but it's great for sealing holes.

The cork/tar tape is messy, but it's better for line sets.

Cork tape is the name. Sticky when it's new but after a few years it will no longer seal. Thumb gum or silicone lasts a lot longer.

Thumb gum in my experience always dries out and falls out unless you take your thumb and redo it once in awhile. Some of them liquefy from the heat of the bonnet and fall apart also. We use silicone 99% of the time now.
