Default What the heck was the previous owner doing???

Found this during the home inspection, but ventured into the crawl space and took a closer look today.

The first pic shows a blower (ducting is feeding from the right) that was stuffed into the existing main line, would feed 3 registers in the downstairs family room. Ran off an extension cord (no longer present). As you can see, the ducts to the family room are not currently active.

The second and third pics show where the ducting used to come off the main and spur off into the downstairs bedroom. They put this blower here instead, again to be powered with an extension cord.

Any ideas what they might've been thinking?? There used to be a wood stove in the basement if that has any bearing.....

Thanks!

Looks like he used those blowers to get the heat from the basement up to the living areas.

I agree. People can sure do some silly things. Although I understand what they were trying to do.

Bit of an update. My wife's cousin was over visiting the other day, he's an HVAC/refrig guy and said he'd take a look.

We ended up removing the blowers, capping the end of the main run with sheet metal and cutting the 3 take offs back into the main run.

So, now I've got some 6" circular ducting and I'm ready to go on my own but he suggested that I remove the old ducting runs and run a hose through them before hooking them up (pretty dirty and lots of spider webs).

Also noted that all the existing 6" runs are not screwed or taped up! Was under there today taping up some joints and it's amazing how much air is leaking out of the existing take offs. Too bad I can't get at the ducts supplying the upstairs!

Anyways, been using that silver tape to seal up the leaks. Should I just use self tapping screws to put everything else back together?

Thanks!
