What blew out of AC vent?

This house had heavy smokers. 59 cig burn marks on LR carpet. One outlet receptical had same brown coning out of it.

What blew out of the ceiling vents to leave those brown marks? I think if there was a fire smoke stains would be gray. How could someone smoke enough in a 15 yo house to cause this? Thanks

It could be nicotine and I have seen some walls coated in it. After 35 yrs in the biz I have seen everything other than a dead body.

It also may be that the return duct in the attic is not sealed properly and could be sucking in dirt and mixed with the smoke is brown. Looks like brown smoke covered dust to me.

Nicotine is horrible and unless you wash the walls the stench never goes away. It is also coated on the inside of the ducts and airhandler/ AC unit and near impossible to get rid of. I would look for a different house if you are shopping for one.

I was a heavy smoker myself for years. The smoke settles out on the walls and ceiling and is very tacky. The airflow over this sticky stuff will deposit other dust on it.

I've seen newly turned apartments turn completely brown/yellow after only one year of a smoker living there. Nasty stuff.

I have seen it coat the inside of return and supply ducts. It is filthy and unless you replace the ductwork it is there 4ever.

If you are committed to a clean it up approach it can be done but is only for those with a ton of time. Formula 49 and similar cleaners will cut the tar. We had a few units that were as bad as it gets and under orders to clean them. We used a commercial degreaser and a wet vac on the walls & ceiling. The flooring had to be replaced. Luckily the units were heated/cooled with Zoneline equipment so we just took those to the shop and sanitized them.

It was a monumental chore but we succeeded.

The air leaving the registers causes a slight static charge on the surfaces it contacts and makes particles, like smoke, stick to them.

after cleaning, if you are going to repaint use a good primer made to cover smoke stains. The schallac based BIN is the best. It is alcohol based and has an odor but it works. $$$$ it is expensive.

Looks like the registers aren't sealed to the ceiling. And the dust is being drawn in from the attic/ceiling cavity.
