what is better ,old fashion brick or inserts?

I have wood burning stove with pipe inside the house ,connecting to flue. It is good, but takes a lot of space in the room at first floor /two story building/, I dream to replace it with nice looking wood burning fireplace. But what is better ,old fashion brick or inserts?
