Water heater

I posted this in the plumbing forum and have a lot of reads but no replies, so I thought I'd try here. I have a 9 year old Bradford-White power vent water heater. It uses the Honeywell "smart valve" gas control. The ignitor glows properly and the pilot then lights OK, but the main burner will rarely light on the first try. It sometimes will make the maxiumum 5 attempts and then cut out for a while. There is a flame sensor rod which appears to be in the pilot flame OK. Any ideas?

The gas valve needs replaced, these valves are famous for failing.

Thanks WIZ. It looks like the valve screws into the tank. Is this a DIY project, or should I get a pro?

You should be able do do this yourself, if you have 2 pipe wrenches and some pipe dope you should be all set, if you dont feel comfortable with it I would suggest calling someone.

I'll give it a try. Am I correct that the valve screws into the tank?

Yes it does. Good luck:thumbup:
