Warm and cold air only coming out of 4 vents in whole house

I own a 1968 4 level split entry house. We have a Trane XE80 gas furnace. The heat and air conditioning comes out like gang busters in only 4 vents in the entire house (2 vents in the basement and 2 vents on ground floor) I can feel just barely a small amount of air flow with the rest of the vents in the house. On the actual furnace there is a lever that opens and closes the flow of air and when closing this it helps... but not a lot. We use small heaters in our bedrooms because it gets very cold up there. My fear is that before we bought the house it had some remodeling done and maybe some of the ducts are closed and are not accessable to be re-opened.
I've also noticed that the air flow goes out of the furnace in two directions and one direction has the lever to open and close the flow of air and the other direction does not. It has some metal duct tape covering a hole so I tend to think that there was a lever there originally but it was removed which might explain the heavy flow of air thru only four vents in the house??? Any help or sugestions would be great. Thanks.

Post some pics of those dampers. You may have a bypass damper for the AC coil and it should be open for winter. You may want to call a "robotic duct cleaner" company as they can run a snake down your vents and see if they are open etc. Otherwise call a heating tech. If too many are closed the furnace will overheat and have a drastically shorter life.

Thanks yuri.... Do you happen to know if those "robotic duct cleaners" can force open a vent from the inside while cleaning?
I'll try and post some pics this evening.

I have never actually watched them work but I hear they send some device down the ducts. I doubt if they could force a damper open but they could at least narrow down the area where it is for you. I would talk to them first about your concerns.
