vinyl compressor cover

I have a Bryant (Carrier) unit. The compressor has an insulated vinyl cover (bag) over it. Mice got into it thinking they would tear the fiberglass out during the winter to make cozy living quarters. Made a big mess.

What is the purpose of this cover? As the compressor is sealed, as is the electrical junction box connection. Unless it serves some purpose I would be reluctant ro replace it, as they just make be back again next winter.

The cover just helps reduce the sound your compressor makes while running.

If thats the case, no need for it!

Take care.

I just got a quote to check for a freon leak of $450, plus $ for soldering repair.
Sound's High for investigating/repairing a 42,000 btu Bryant (Carrier) unit.
Replacement of the outside unit and coil and 20 feet of tubing was quoted at $4,900. Sounds high too?
Based on "13 year age", they of course, are recommending replacement.
13 years sounds young for a unit in NJ that only opererates 3-4 months /yr?

With the current price of copper and the fact that no new a/c can be made less than 13 seer your price will seem kind of high. The quote for 450 $ to find a leak seems way to high to me also.
