Venting Options

We are remodling and there is a 4" vent to the roof in the upstairs, it starts in the closet of our HVAC - I am wanting to know our options. Can we move it? Is there a different way to vent for our HVAC?

Thanks!

If it is a 4" metal chimney then probably not unless you want to run it outside the house and that may be ugly. Best to call a reputable HVAC contractor as there are code issues etc.

It turns out it is a 6" metal chiminy instead of 4" like I prevously thought. It is not connecting to anything in the HVAC closet, and we beleive it is left over from the previous Heating Unit.

The current Gas Furnace is only about 5 years old, and it is not connected to this 6" chiminy.

Would we be save to remove it completely?

Are you sure its not a combustion air intake?

If it is, you can not remove it.

Honestly I can't say it isn't. It doesn't make sense to me it acutally vents anything because the louvered door of the closet is in our living area downstairs.

How could I be able to tell if it is air intake?

Wait - I think I know what the fresh air intake is. We have a grille upstairs and it is about 3" x 2". I beleive this is connected to the fresh air inatake. Does that sound correct?

I would recommend you call a experienced tech and have him do an annual maintenance on the furnace and look it over for you. Impossible to safely tell you anything without seeing it in person. Louvered door or not you may need a combustion air pipe or you will get incomplete combustion AND CO poisoning!!

Combustion air intake. Would be terminated in the furnace room/closet.
