Venting old furnace without original chimney

The chimney on my house is brick lined with a rectaguar clay flue. It is in poor condition. I am wondering if I could take the chiney down below the roof and fabricate a steel box then flash and shingle that in. The furnace is old forced air. The pilot is auto light so not super old, and the water heater is vented through the chimney as well.

Venting old furnace without original chimney

As long as it's not in danger of falling and it's not leaking water through the mortar I would put a liner in it with a new cap.

No Warranty Means- If it breaks in half you get to keep both halves.
