Venting NG Hot Water heater through roof
I'm getting ready to re-roof my home and want to tackle a project while I'm up there. Currently I have a 2 stack chimney that was dressed out in fake metal brick that has rusted out from years of weather. One of the flues was for a wood burning furnace that was removed years ago and capped off. The second one is for the NG water heater. I'd like to remove the chimney and the piping for the stack that is not being used.

My question is what do I need to use then for a roof vent for the water heater? Do I need to extend it up X amount of inches with a rain cap? Or does it just need to come out enough to use a box vent?

Thanks for any advice.

Has to extend 3 foot above roof peak, or 2 foot above anything within 10 foot of it horizontally. So you'll be extending part o the chimney. or running it in B vent.

Optionally, if you are close to needing a new HWH anyway, buy a direct vent power vent NG HWH and run it out your foundation wall with 3 inch PVC pipe.

Wow that high? Might be scrapping that idea and just keeping the chimney then and just having someone come out and bend a new cap to keep the rain out.

Unfortunately I just replaced the HWH last summer.

Actually I prefer non-powervent WHs. Fewer parts to malfunction.

My house is brick with very little of the foundation exposed on that side so drilling through all that to vent out the side wouldn't be a whole lot of fun anyways.

I was just hoping to get rid of a stupid looking chimney. Sounds like it would look much worse with out it if I just have a single stack sticking out.
