I am planning to install a new over-range microwave and vent outdoors (no vent installed previously).
The outside is vinyl siding, and the microwave calls for a 3.5" x 10" rectangular vent. I found an outdoor aluminum vent cover at the home center, but the part that presses up against the house is flat. Do I just screw it in and caulk behind it, or is there a trim piece I can get? They didn't have anything there.
I've never done any siding work.

Siding needs to come off around the area where the vent goes and cut to fit after the J moulding goes in. (there is no way to just cut out around the hole to install it).
Vent goes in, if there's house wrap it needs to be cut and laided over the flange at the top.
Over lay the flange with 6" wide door and window tape starting at the bottom then the sides, finishing with the top
5/8 J moulding is used to trim it out.
Looks like a simple job, done wrong it's a leak waiting to happen.
There needs to be cut outs at the bottom of the J for drainage, tabs bent over at the top.
Siding is cut to fit according to what the temperature is.
It expands and contracts a lot.
Cut to long and it buckles, to short and gaps open up and water gets in.
