Vent covers

I just saw this setup for alternative vent covers: http://www.remodelista.com/posts/arc...e-heating-vent

And as I am in the middle of a re-model was wondering what would be some potential problems with this setup and what I would need to consider if I did something similar.

Vent covers

- may whistle
- will get dirty and be hard to clean the holes
-may slow down the flow and throw pattern of the air and coverage it makes in the room/circulation and comfort
-that idea is good for convection heaters/boiler radiators

I'd suggest router-ing the holes (both front- and back-side) with a roundover bit and painting with semi-gloss paint.

Vent covers

Thanks for the notes.

If I do it I will make it routed, removable, and research the proper airflow so I can match that with amount/size of holes.

Vent covers

These would probably work for returns if they are big enough but for supply vents I agree with Yuri with concerns about round holes distributing the air correctly.

Yeah, if you carefully look at a register there is some engineering involved in the shape and angle of the fins etc. Designed to throw the air far so that it sweeps downward and provides a circle/circulation effect. Those holes may prevent/eliminate that effect.
